How Our Brains Learn
(mandatory for potential volunteers)

In this two hour, interactive workshop, Torri Chappell will demonstrate, explain and clarify the basic neuroscience of how we relate to others as well as how we learn. The language we use, both verbal and nonverbal, plays a leading role in setting the stage for learning. Participants will gain insight into their own learning experiences as well as learn new ways to help inspire learning in others. After this workshop, you will have a new lens through which to view the world.

Inspire Engaged and Fluent Readers

Reading is about more than just letters and sounds. Even though phonics is an important ingredient, understanding the reading process and effective reading strategies that proficient readers use can help us as we support and nurture our young students to become confident, fluent and empowered readers for life. This workshop will help participants understand how readers learn, as well as why some struggle, and provide effective strategies to help those struggling students become engaged with and excited about reading.

Help Resistant Writers

Communicating clearly and effectively through writing is an essential life skill. Knowing why some young writers struggle and how to help them makes teaching and parenting easier. In this workshop, you will learn what to do and say that will help the struggling writers in your life.

Empower Struggling Spellers

Becoming a confident speller is an essential part of writing. In this workshop, you will gain insight into common spelling challenges and learn effective spelling strategies and activities that will help empower struggling spellers young and old.

Back to Basics - Supporting K-2 Students in Addition and Subtraction

In order for our students to be successful in math, they need to have a good sense of numbers and understand basic addition and subtraction. This workshop will explore concrete methods that reinforce the basic concepts of primary math. Simple games and hands-on activities will make the two hours fly by and provide participants with new tips and tricks to add to your own teaching toolkit.

Making Multiplication Facts Fun (3-5)

One of the most common struggles of young math students is learning their multiplication facts. This comes easily to some but not to others. In this workshop, you will learn how to reinforce the concept of multiplication and help children master their facts in a fun, engaging and effective way that goes beyond flash cards.

Working with English Language Learners

Learning in a language that is not your mother tongue adds many extra challenges. To be successful in working with English language learners, it is important to be mindful of the factors that impact this ever-growing group of students. This workshop will increase your awareness of this student population’s unique learning situation and will teach different academic adaptations we can employ to enhance learning and increase confidence in children who do not speak English as their first language.

Demystifying Learning Differences

We all learn differently and many of us face situations with expectations that are mismatched with how we learn most effectively. If you find yourself stymied by a learning difference of your own or in someone else, come to this workshop and gain insights into how to support and accommodate different kinds of learners.

Behavior Management

Whether it is managing our own behavior or helping others manage their behavior, every day presents new opportunities for all of us to do things differently in a way that makes learning possible and life better. This workshop will provide participants with the tools needed to see what causes disruptive behaviors and what to do to encourage and support more cooperative options.

Breaking Down Homework Barriers

We all want homework to help instead of hinder learning. Unfortunately, there are many barriers that prevent this ideal. This workshop will bring clarity and solutions to anyone who has experienced frustrations around homework dilemmas.

The training really gave me confidence.>
